Dental Anxiety Is Real. Here’s How We Work With Nervous Patients.

You’re not weird for being afraid of the dentist.

Dental anxiety is one of the most common fears out there. Millions of adults deal with it. Some people had a bad experience as a kid. Some have a strong gag reflex. Others just don’t like the sounds, smells, or feeling of not being in control. Many can’t even explain why they feel anxious the moment they walk into a dental office.

None of that makes you a difficult patient. It makes you human. At Thompson Advanced Dentistry, we work with nervous patients every single week. It’s not something we have to figure out on the fly. It’s a normal part of our day. And we’ve learned a thing or two about what actually helps.

Dental Anxiety Is Real. Here's How We Help in Greeley, CO Dentist

We Don’t Rush You

One of the biggest fears we hear is feeling trapped. You’re in the chair, your mouth’s open, and you can’t say “stop” or “wait.” That’s a real fear, and we take it seriously.

We tell every patient up front that if they need a break, they raise their hand, and we stop immediately. No questions, no sighs, no “just one more minute.” We stop. You get a moment. Then we pick back up when you’re ready.

That one small thing, knowing you have an out, makes a huge difference for many people.

We Explain Everything Before We Do It

A lot of dental anxiety comes from not knowing what’s happening next. Will it hurt? What’s that tool for? Why is that machine making that noise?

So we tell you. Before we do anything, we walk you through what we’re going to do, what it’ll feel like, and how long it’ll take. If you want to know more, we’ll show you the instruments. If you’d rather not know, that’s fine too; we’ll just tell you when we’re about to start.

You’re in charge of how much information you get. We follow your lead.

We Talk About Sedation Options

Some patients do fine with a little extra reassurance. Others need more help, and that’s okay.

We offer sedation options for patients who need them. That might mean nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to take the edge off, or oral sedation for patients with stronger anxiety. We’ll talk through the options, explain the pros and cons, and help you decide what feels right.

You don’t have to white-knuckle a procedure. There’s no prize for suffering. If sedation helps you get the care you need, we support it.

We Don’t Judge

This might be the most important one. Many nervous patients haven’t been to the dentist in years. They’re embarrassed about their teeth, their gums, or how long it’s been. They expect a lecture.

We don’t do lectures. We’re not here to make you feel bad about where you’re starting. We’re here to help you get where you want to go. That’s it.

We Go at Your Pace

If you just want to come in to meet us and see the office before your first real appointment, we can do that. If you need to start with a cleaning and nothing else, that’s fine. Or if you need to break a bigger treatment into smaller visits, we can plan for that.

No one has to get everything done at once. We’ll work with you to build a manageable plan.

You’re Not Alone in This

If you’ve been putting off dental care because of anxiety, we want you to know you’re not the only one. And you’re not stuck. We’ve helped many nervous patients get through treatment and come out the other side feeling relieved and proud.

Call our Greeley office at 970-205-9614 or request an appointment online. Tell us you’re nervous. We’ll take it from there, gently, at your pace.
