Prevention, Step One: Proper Brushing
The most important element of your hygiene routine is arguably twice-daily brushings. Ideally, you should brush in the mornings before meals and at night just before going to bed. Timing is everything; it’s not a good idea to immediately brush your teeth after sugary or acidic meals and drinks. While the acid from drinks and debris from food need to be addressed, your teeth also need time to effectively recover from these substances.
Whether you have a traditional soft-bristled brush or an electric, it is important that you feel the bristles on your gums. With your brush at a 45-degree angle, use a small circular motion and be sure to clean the outer, inner, and biting surfaces. The tip of the brush can be used to carefully clean the inside of your front teeth. And finally, don’t forget to clean your tongue, which helps remove bacteria and keeps your breath smelling fresh.
Prevention, Step Two: Daily Flossing
Flossing tends to be the most neglected hygiene habit due to those hard-to-reach areas in your smile. This routine helps remove the build-up of plaque that can compromise the health and structure of your teeth. Untreated plaque can eat away at the enamel, causing distracting gaps between your teeth.
You should take at least 18 inches of dental floss. Wrapping the ends around your middle fingers, use your thumbs and forefingers as a guide to gently insert the floss between your teeth. You should curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gum line, gently moving up and down on each side.
Prevention, Step Three: Thorough Rinsing
Because it is not a good idea to brush your teeth immediately after meals and sugary drinks, you should rinse with cool water. A quick rinse loosens debris and cleans away excess sugar and acids. This helps you maintain a bright, healthy smile. Drinking water on a regular basis is a great idea in general. Otherwise, the production of saliva would slow down and your natural defenses against decay would not be as effective.
